It’s not just a question of knowing the theory or practicing a lot of questions…

Before you even start solving, ask these three questions!

Question 1 : Should I Solve?

yes-or-no

Yes, the NIMCET is not like your regular college exams. It is impossible to solve all the questions and some questions might just not be worth the amount of time it will take you to solve it. If you feel that the problem is too dangerous to handle safely, then you should drop it without any regrets. Students feel scared if they are not able to solve 3 or 4 problems in a row. They think – “Hum toh gaye!” But don’t be afraid! You should feel happy and think – “Thank God I didn’t attempt it! I would have wasted so much time!”

It’s a strategic retreat. It actually takes you ahead of the competition. You will score more than all the 1000s of students who decided to instead attempt that problem.

So the first question you should ask before you attempt a NIMCET problem is – Should I solve this? If the answer is no, just drop the problem and go to the next one, and then ask Question 1 again!

If instead, the answer was yes, you should ask Question No. 2!

Question 2 : Should I Solve this NOW?

This is the jack in the box, that one secret question that can make all the difference. It is the secret to great time management. You see a question, you think you might be able to solve it. But should you solve it now? If it is a type of question you have seen before and are very confident that you can solve it – Then solve it now.

But if you are not completely sure about the question. If you can’t see the answer clearly, or if you think this question will take a lot of time for you to solve- Solve it Later.

This is the hard part. It’s very difficult to take the decision to solve something later- It feels like you are giving up. Because, in regular exams, all questions were simple and you could attempt all questions one after the other. However, this is a practice you have to un-learn for a competitive exam like the NIMCET. Giving NIMCET mock tests will help you overcome the solving habits of the past 10 years.

If the answer is no – Mark the question, circle it or make a symbol for it. If you are giving an online exam, then you can directly mark it as ‘save for later’.

If the answer to this question is yes- Then, (and only then!) ask yourself Question 3-

Questions 3 : How do I solve it?

student

This is the question that students usually ask first, they forget to ask the first two questions. In the exam, it’s important that you don’t panic, keep calm and remember the first two questions, and reserve the third question only for those problems that clear the first two questions!

Having the practice of taking tests helps you answer these three questions. Your academic knowledge is only one part of scoring in NIMCET. How you take the test is equally important in getting a good score. At this point, your practice in solving questions will teach you how to attempt a question.
